Growing Up Too Quickly

I have learned many things during this journey. I know more
about the medical world, drugs, hospitals, research and doctors
than I ever thought I would. I have also learned a lot about the
sad state of cancer research in the world. Childhood cancer is
one of the leading causes of death among children yet it is the
least funded of all cancer types. I have become close with other
children with cancer, Ewing’s and other types, who have already
passed away. All of this is really messed up.

I have also learned something about people. When you are
struggling with cancer, there are two types of people in your life.
There are people who, for whatever reason, disappear from your
life. I don’t know exactly why, perhaps they don’t have time for
someone dealing with cancer, or maybe they can’t handle facing
the reality of my situation. Whatever the reason, I have to say
that as hard as it might be for them to deal with my situation, I
guarantee it is harder from where I sit.

There are also amazing people who can’t do enough for me and
my family. I appreciate how people check in on me, wear my blue
Sam’s Team bracelets and want to know what they can do to
help, but I will also admit that I have a hard time getting all of this
attention just because I have cancer. It’s really hard to balance
those two things and sometimes I don’t do a very good job of it.
